“Indian Women Scientists Association”, at Vashi, is an organization that works extensively towards creating awareness in environmental issues and concerns amongst school children.

As an initiative working towards involving school children in their cause, IWSA held a competition for school children, where the students were asked select an environmental problem relevant to their school situation, study the problem and develop solutions.

About 30 schools participated in this competition. DJHS, Mumbai involved 10 students of class 8 for this project. After an intensive brainstorming session the students selected the topic of ‘Traffic Congestion outside their School Gate’, which is a serious problem in the mornings, when the school begins and in the afternoons, when the school gets over.

Experts in this field guided students about the procedure. The project was initiated in October 2009 and completed in April 2010. Students worked hard to collect data to measure air pollution and noise pollution at various hours. They addressed the issue in parent’s meeting and sought their support in solving the problem. They came up with suggestions and even met the Traffic Assistant suggesting setting up a signal and zebra crossing outside the school.

The presentation on the final day was appreciated and the students were able to answer all the questions posed by the panel of judges indicative of their hard work and research. Students won a prize in special category and trophy, certificate and cash prize for the teachers and certificates and coupons for books for students. It was a fruitful and enriching experience for all involved.
