Floods of people shopping and celebrating during the 2009 Mothers Day weekend at Nairobi’s Westgate Mall stopped by the Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi Student Art Exhibit. The exhibit featured the work of current International Baccalaureate Diploma students in their first and second year. These students are currently taking Visual Art at Standard or Higher Level. Amongst the pieces displayed was Carl Munyuthe’s (Class of 2009) piece of a profile of a Masaai Woman done in pencil on wax paper, Karim Hasham’s (Class of 2010) piece of a woman screaming in paint and wood pieces, and Sandeep Sura Singh’s (Class of 2010) piece of a 3-dimensional gecko as well as many other pieces by many other students.

Approximately 2,500 people stopped to look at the pieces of our students and enquired about the Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Many of the visitors enquired if they could buy some of the pieces, which is a good way for those students who are selling their work to save for a university education. Because of the successful nature of this event, similar showcases have been set up including one at Nairobi’s ever popular Village Market in Gigiri.
