At the very heart of our conclusions - is one, central conviction: the key to future progress in the developing world will be its ability to identify, to develop, and to retain expert and effective home-grown leadership.

The Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad

The City
Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh is the fifth largest metropolitan city of India with a population of over six million. Known for its rich history, culture and architecture,  the city was selected to house the second Aga Khan Academy to meet the education needs of the country and develop home-grown intellectual talent of exceptional calibre. The extraordinary efforts expended in creating the Academy - from the planning that will make optimal use of the land, to the creation of a special centre for the professional development of teachers, to the careful design of the buildings, courtyards and common areas - are aimed at graduating young men and women who are not only prized by the best universities, but by society itself.

The exceptional site allocated by the Government of Andra Pradesh in August 2005 for the Academy reflects the government’s support for the catalytic effects the Academy is expected to have in the state and the country.

The Programme
The Academies’ education is built on the framework of the globally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) programme that strives to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities and community life. Already, the programme at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa has been instrumental in producing a group of socially conscious individuals committed to the development of their communities, their nation and civil society.

The Academy welcomes students from all regions on its residential campus and admission is based on merit. Based on the successful model implemented at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, the educational programme of the Academy is expected to also create home-grown ethical leaders who will go on to the best universities anywhere in the world, pursue careers of their choice, and build and lead the institutions of civil society in their country and across the globe.

Since the site was acquired, extensive research to understand the country’s educational environment has been completed. These research studies establish a broad foundation of knowledge about India’s multi-year development plans and their human-resource capacity implications; the quality, and typical career paths of the teaching force; student demographics; university entrance requirements; and the attitudes and expectations of parents and teachers towards education, including the Aga Khan Academies programme.

Concurrent with these studies, unique elements of the Aga Khan Academies education have also been developed and are being tested and refined. These include methods of identifying talented students; admissions and financial aid processes that maintain a high level of integrity; faculty selection and professional development processes that are effective; and curriculum development.

Extensive surveying combined with topographical, geotechnical and climatic studies have taken place to allow site planners and architects to optimize the use of the outstanding sites. Master Site Planning and Concept designs have been completed with detailed design and site works (sports fields and peripheral planting) now started. Early construction has started and will include the Professional Development Centre. A plant nursery is now well established and landscaping has started. Download aerial map (PDF)

The buildings and spaces of the Academy will seek to provide an aesthetically well-conceived environment conducive to reflection, to study, and enjoyment within an appropriate cultural context. Early construction will include the Academy Building, which will be the functional heart of the campus, housing not only the books, technology, computer labs, seminar rooms, library staff and study space of the Senior school but the offices of admissions and administration.
