Location
Situated on Africa’s east coast, Maputo, the thriving capital of Mozambique, carries a rich vein of local history and culture, along with more recent influences from Portugal and the former Communist Bloc countries. It is here that the Mozambican Academy, to be known as AKA, Maputo, will be built.

The 21.8 hectare site, located in the district of Matola, approximately 20 km from Maputo city centre, was kindly donated by the Mozambican government. View Google map

Education Programme
The Academies’ education model is built on the framework of the globally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, which strives to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities, and community life.

The academic programme is intended to foster an ethical and public-minded approach and gives emphasis to the concepts of meritocracy, pluralism, and civil society.  It is designed to enhance students’ academic excellence, their sense of civic responsibility, their understanding of global issues, and their analytical and study skills.  The programme reflects an understanding of and great sensitivity to the local languages, history, cultures and environment.

AKA, Maputo welcomes students to its residential campus from all regions of Mozambique and surrounding countries,. Admission is based on merit. Modelled on the first Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, the educational programme of the Academy is designed to foster home-grown, ethical leaders, who will go on to the best universities in the world, pursue careers of their choice, and build and lead institutions of civil society in their country and across the globe.

Since the site was acquired, extensive research has been completed to understand the country’s education environment.

This research has helped AKA, Maputo to establish a broad foundation of knowledge about:

- Mozambique’s development plans and human-resource capacity implications;

- The quality and typical career paths of the teaching body;

- Student demographics;

- University entrance requirements;

- The attitudes and expectations of parents and teachers towards education, including the proposed Aga Khan Academy itself.

Concurrent with these studies, unique elements of the Aga Khan Academies education have also been developed and are now being tested and refined. These include:

- Methods of identifying gifted and talented students;

- Admissions and financial aid processes;

- Efficacy in faculty selection and professional development processes;

- Curriculum planning and development;

- Innovations in learning space design.

In July 2009, an operating Professional Development Centre (PDC) was launched and the Director of Academic Planning and Development, Lee Davis, appointed. Mr. Davis, formerly at the International Baccalaureate Organisation in the UKleading the Online Learning programme, will be focusing on establishing AKA, Maputo’s presence in Mozambique. He will also launch the Academy’s outreach efforts through professional development programmes for educators at Government Schools.

Until such time as AKA, Maputo opens, the PDC will be located in a building at the nearby AKDN site in Matola. The building is currently being renovated and expected to open in early 2010.
