The Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad offers an educational programme that combines the highest standard academic curriculum with unique travel, study and extracurricular experiences. This broad-based programme prepares students to succeed in higher education and beyond, and to become responsible citizens of the world.
The Academy’s educational programme is developed according to the principles of the globally renowned International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB is a rigorous, multidisciplinary curriculum that fosters intellectual curiosity, creativity, leadership development, social consciousness and a pluralistic outlook.
The IB is also recognised for preparing students for admission to the best universities in their own countries and abroad.
Subjects of Study
Students at the Academy study a wide range of subjects, with an emphasis on the humanities. Areas of study include, but are not limited to:
- general sciences comprising physics, biology and chemistry
- philosophy and ethics
- a foreign language and the study of foreign cultures
- comparative religion
- history, theory and criticism of the arts
- social sciences, including political science, government and global economics.
The students’ programme of study has been developed to fulfill the requirements of both the International Baccalaureate and the Indian National Curriculum.
Extending the Curriculum
The academic curriculum is enhanced by co-curricular experiences and by international travel and study opportunities unique to the network of Aga Khan Academies. Co-curricular athletics, arts and community service opportunities are offered to all students and complement the curriculum to provide a well-rounded educational programme. In addition, all AKA, Hyderabad students and faculty are members of a far-reaching global network and will travel internationally to spend time at one of the other Aga Khan Academies in order to broaden their outlook and experience.
Students at the Academy are expected to master at least two languages, one of which is English. Proficiency in more than one language grants access to far wider sources of information and opportunity than knowledge of one language only.
A programme of computer literacy provides students at all levels with hands-on experience with computers. This experience allows them to develop skills and become fluent with the computer and information technologies that are essential to life in today’s world.
Expectations of a Graduate
Upon graduation from the Academy, students are expected to be knowledgeable across a range of disciplines and traditions, to be computer literate, and to have mastered at least two languages, including English. They should be open-minded learners with a strong sense of integrity, justice and respect for others, as well as critical and creative thinkers who can communicate ideas orally, in writing, and through art and music.
Having completed their programme at the Academy, graduates are well prepared to continue their learning through higher education and to pursue opportunities in an increasingly complex and interdependent world.
