The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa

"The Academies curriculum seeks to instill a habit of intellectual humility which constantly opens young minds to what it is that they do not know, and which sends them on a wide and rigorous search for new knowledge. In my view, the most important thing a student can learn in any educational institution is the ability to keep on learning."

- His Highness the Aga Khan

His Highness the Aga Khan’s conviction that home-grown intellectual leadership of exceptional calibre is the best driver of a society’s future development has led to the creation of an integrated network of Academies dedicated to recruiting and educating students of promise, serious intent, and good character to become future leaders of their country’s institutions of civil society. The Academies’ rigorous and globally minded academic programme, based on the widely recognized International Baccalaureate Programme, combined with state-of-the-art facilities, and a pluralistic, multicultural learning community, challenges exceptional students of all backgrounds to fulfil their destinies as learners and leaders in their communities and across the globe.

Khadija Dohry:
Bridging Diversity

"I am greatly interested in development, and my dream is to root poverty out of African societies by promoting good quality education for the less fortunate so that they can change the face of our society."

The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, opened in August 2003, and is the first of the planned network of 18 academies across Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East. The academic programme, intended to foster an ethical and public-minded approach, is designed to enhance students’ academic excellence, their analytical and study skills, their sense of civic responsibility, their understanding of global issues, and their creativity. The programme is characterised by active student participation, rather than passive listening and watching, and is led by an experienced local and international faculty, dedicated to their students’ learning and growth and to their own continuous professional and personal development. International examination results place the school in the top tier for academic performance world-wide.
