The Residential Academy

Residential AcademyThe Residential Programme of the Academy officially opened its door in April 2009, and the first boarding students have moved in. The residential experience is about learning and growth stimulated by the constant interaction among faculty and student peers of great talent, character, and leadership. The residential experience is expected to greatly extend and enrich the overall educational experience.

The first phase is now complete. On the residential tour for dorm parents a few weeks prior to move in, the dorms were described as warm and homely and the architecture inviting and peaceful.  "The dorms are beyond what we initially visualized based on the architectural renderings,” said Serem Kipkemoi, a Dorm Parent. “It’s breathtaking, it’s meticulous, it’s real; it’s an honour to be involved in the residential component of the Academy.”

The Commons, which will be completed in the next phase, will house the dining hall and an array of spaces for school activities. It will be the hub of student activity, serving as the Academy’s main space for major school functions, including music and drama performances and public lectures. “The tour of the residential facility gave me a great sense of fulfillment,” said Bernard Dudi, another Dorm Parent. “I appreciate the amount of planning and resources and the thoroughness of the execution.”

The culture of the Aga Khan Academy is based on respect, integrity, honesty, fairness, empathy and good humour.  Students, teachers, and administrative staff create and sustain this positive learning environment. As such, the experience of a pluralistic learning community will be especially rich for students in residence given the constant interactions among students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

The focus of the residential programme is on students’ intellectual, social, spiritual and physical growth in a structured and ethical environment.  In the words of Aziz Batada, another Dorm Parent, “the residential experience allows the typical school day - where the vision of the Aga Khan Academy is continuously being lived - to be extended, and education itself is seen as a part of every moment of an individual's life.”

Construction for the residential academy is ongoing. We will provide you with periodic updates.
