Primary Years Programme: Foundations for Life-long Learning
Fun and games in the playground of the Junior section of the Academy...The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa was authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum by the International Baccalaureate Organization in April, 2007. The Programme, for students in years 1 through 6 (aged 6 to 11), focuses on the development of the whole child and is geared towards creating independent, confident and respectful learners. Classroom curriculum and after-school activities focus on addressing social, physical, cultural and ethical requirements, while giving students a strong foundation in all the major areas of knowledge. The curriculum consists of five essential elements: concepts, knowledge, skills, attitude, and action. The knowledge element is enhanced through inquiry into six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, supported and balanced by subject areas. In addition to core subjects of English language, mathematics, social studies, science and technology, the programme also includes a beginner’s computing course, physical education, music, art, French and Kiswahili.
Through an interactive, student-centered approach, students and teachers explore questions in all subject areas and focus on the six transdisciplinary themes: who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how the world works, how we organize ourselves, and sharing the planet. The PYP thus develops students who are well-versed in all areas of knowledge, intellectually curious, principled, caring, open-minded, well-balanced, and reflective learners.
