Junior School Physical Education and Competitive Sports

Junior School Physical Education and Competitive SportsKeeping with its mission of focusing on the whole child, the Academy offers student-centred teaching and interactive learning environments designed to stimulate the joy of inquiry both inside and outside the classrooms. Students are exposed to regular physical education activities as part of the curriculum, as well as given a chance to participate in competitive games and sports that foster team building, independence, confidence, and self-respect.

Physical Education Curriculum
Each week the students participate in the following:

  • 4 x 30 minutes PE lessons
  • 2 x 30 minutes swimming lesson


The activities include the following:

  • Invasion Games* (Football, Hockey, Rugby, Netball, Basketball)
  • Striking and Fielding Games* (Cricket, Rounders)
  • Racket Sports (Tennis, Badminton, Squash)
  • Aquatics (Swimming, Water Polo, Water based Activities)
  • Athletics
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Health Related Exercise

* Structured games begin to be taught in Year 3 or 4. In the earlier years students play adapted versions of the games listed above.


Extra Curricular Sport

Extra Curricular Sport at the Aga Khan Academy, MombasaInter School
Junior School students have the opportunity to represent their school in the U11 age category in sports, such as Cricket, Rounders, Hockey, Netball, Football and Athletics, against other Mombasa Schools.

Swim Team
The Junior School has a very active and successful swim team that trains between three and five times a week. The swim team caters for students of all abilities and participates in regular competitions both locally and nationally.

Clubs
Students are offered a wide range of sporting activities during Junior School Clubs. These clubs are held on Mondays and Thursdays after school.

Inter House
Junior School students are allocated houses coded in colors, such as Red, Blue, Green or Yellow. A number of Inter House events are held during the year, that include the Inter House Swimming Gala and the Inter House Athletics.
