The Aga Khan Academy Team: Swimming to Success
The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa has been awarded IB Status by the International Body
One of the distinguishing features of the network of Academies is their work as Professional Development Centres (PDCs). Within their PDC capacity each Academy will be dedicated to training new teachers to the highest standards while offering veteran teachers the opportunity to stay on the cutting edge of education through research and practice.
An integral part of the Aga Khan Academy's mission is to strengthen the profession of teaching by investing substantially in the professional development of teachers. In being a Professional Development Centre the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, intends to provide ongoing, collaborative training for Academy faculty as well as teachers from neighbouring government, private and not-for-profit schools, thus creating a multiplier effect to enhance the quality of education more broadly. Each faculty member will have the opportunity to draw upon a wide range of professional development opportunities targeting a variety of topics and capabilities, including general pedagogical skills, interactive learning techniques, and student-centered teaching methods. Promoting excellence in teaching, both on campus and in the broader region, is a fundamental goal of the Aga Khan Academy and serves continually to strengthen the quality and vitality of the Academy's faculty.
The Aga Khan Academies Professional Learning for Educators Series
The first outreach programme, involving both early childhood teachers from the AKF Madrasa programme and English teachers from a nearby Primary School in Mombasa, began in August of 2009. The "Programme for Teachers of English" is the first in a proposed suite of programmes grouped under the "The Aga Khan Academies Professional Learning for Educators Series". It is a comprehensive programme divided into three tiers, each ten weeks in length, focussed on improving language fluency, building confidence in communication, and developing understanding of best practice in language teaching and learning.
IB Teacher Training Workshops
Before a school receives authorization to teach the IB curriculum, the teachers involved are required to undergo necessary training. The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa now offers authorized IB teacher-training workshops for Primary and Middle School teachers as well as Diploma teachers.
To accommodate a diverse range of learners, the IB workshops are designed for both new and experienced teachers interested in increasing their knowledge and expertise about the IB program.
The workshops include strategies and techniques for teaching IB courses effectively in a classroom and are led by highly-trained IB experts. Each workshop allows teachers to assess and build their skills around the curriculum as well as understand and compare the assessment criteria. The workshops also offer teachers a chance to interact directly with and be able to offer their input to the workshop leaders. They also allow the participants to discuss and share their own ideas, practices, and strategies, while working alongside other IB teachers from a broad range of backgrounds.
