Aga Khan Concludes Kenya Visit

Nairobi, Kenya, 29 May 2002 - His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismaili Muslims, today concluded a short visit to Kenya, during which he had meetings with President Daniel arap Moi and other senior government officials.

Among the topics discussed was the increasing breadth of activities of the Aga Khan Development Network in Kenya since the Aga Khan's last official visit here in 1997.

Whilst in Nairobi, the Aga Khan visited the new 61-room private wing at the Aga Khan Hospital which includes a state of the art laboratory and a physiotherapy unit. He also visited the Aga Khan Academy, and the 42-acre site on which the Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya intends to develop a private educational complex which will include pre-primary to higher secondary level facilities.

During his brief stay, the Aga Khan also had the opportunity to meet with members of the Ismaili Muslim community.

Social and economic development institutions of the Aga Khan Development Network have been active in Kenya for several decades. In addition to education, health and rural development programmes sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation, the Aga Khan Education Service operates some fifteen schools and the Aga Khan Health Service runs three major hospitals in Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa. Planning has been completed for a degree-awarding Advanced Nursing Programme of the Aga Khan University (Pakistan) to be established in Kenya. Through project companies of Industrial Promotion Services (Kenya) Ltd. in sectors as diverse as agroprocessing, packaging and power generation, the Serena collection of lodges and hotels and financial institutions such as Diamond Trust Bank and the Jubilee Insurance Company, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development promotes enterprise and development in the private sector.

The Aga Khan leaves Nairobi today.
