Aga Khan Education Service, Bangladesh
The Aga Khan Education Service (AKES) is considered one of the country’s leading providers of quality education. A volunteer Board of Directors manage the non-profit organization. Financial surpluses re-invested so as to continuously enhance education.

On 13 December 1987, His Highness the Aga Khan appointed the pioneer members of the Education Board. A three-phase development plan was formulated. The Aga Khan provided a grant and the Aga Khan Foundation funded the School’s major capital expenditure. Operational costs were partially covered by school fees.

A small formal institution was established to educate youth, based on the British Certification System with English as the language of instruction. The School offered Class Nine (O Level) through to Class 12 (A Level) education. From its earliest days, the School was equipped with a science laboratory and a library for its 25 students, seven teachers and Acting Principal, Mr Mohiuddin Babar.

Upon completing Phase One, AKES proceeded to identify a temporary School building. The AKES secured a purpose-built school and in August 1990, 50 students, 15 teachers and the Acting Principal, Mr Babar, moved in to their new Uttara premises. Shortly after, Mr Zul Khoja, a Canadian National, was appointed as Principal of the Aga Khan School, Dhaka.

In May 1993, the Aga Khan signed a Protocol Agreement with the Government of Bangladesh establishing the Aga Khan Education Service in the country.

From 1994 - 1997, Canadian Kenneth McCaffery was Principal. Since 1997, Mr George G. Kays, also a Canadian National, has led the reins.

Recently, the Aga Khan Education Service secured a 15-acre site for the construction of an Aga Khan Academy. The new purpose-bullt school will feature student-centred teaching and learning environments designed to stimulate the joy of inquiry, and a broad, multidisciplinary education with an emphasis on the humanities.
