The Aga Khan Approach
The Diamond Jubilee High School for Boys, Mumbai
strives to create a harmonious balance between
academic demands, sporting and cultural activities
and community life. It challenges its pupils to
be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious.
The School believes that while what students know
is important, the true measure of a student’s
education is the ability to analyse what they
do not know.
Developing critical thinking and analysis is therefore
at the core of the School’s mission. The
School also encourages students to respect and
appreciate other people’s cultures, social
structures, values and beliefs. Taken together,
these objectives are designed to help equip children
with the tools they will need to make their way
in school, society and an increasingly interdependent
world.
School History
In 1947, following India's Independence from the
British, Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah, Aga Khan III,
established the Diamond Jubilee High School for
Boys. Over the years, the School has established
itself as an institution offering quality education
to children of varied backgrounds and cultures.
The School is recognized by the Maharashtra State
Education Department. It currently has 1,288 students
from the pre-primary to Grade 10. To ensure quality
teaching-learning processes in the classroom and
to enhance performance, the School appoints additional
teachers per division at all levels. It also invests
heavily in teacher training and development, educational
resources, classroom equipment and infrastructure.
The School is part of the Aga Khan Education Services
(AKES). It has a long tradition of leadership
in educational development. The foundations of
the present system were laid by Sir Sultan Mohamed
Shah, Aga Khan III, under whose guidance over
200 schools were established during the first
half of the 20th century, the first of them in
1905 in Zanzibar, Gwadur in Pakistan and Mundra
in India. Since the creation of Aga Khan Education
Service companies in the 1970s, the schools have
been centrally administered and managed.
AKES currently operates more than 300 schools
and advanced educational programmes that provide
quality pre-school, primary, secondary and higher
secondary education services to more than 54,000
students in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Kenya,
Kyrgyz Republic, Uganda, Tanzania and Tajikistan.
Schools are also envisaged, or under development,
in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique and Syria.
School timings
The school operates from 8.05 a.m. to
2.10 p.m. from Monday to Friday (Primary and Secondary
sections). The pre-Primary works in 2 shifts:
the morning shift begins at 8.30 a.m. and the
afternoon shift begins at 12 noon.
Parent-Teacher Association
The School supports and encourages an on-going
partnership between the School, parents and
management. The School regularly seeks parental
co-operation and assistance through the Parent-Teacher
Association (PTA), which promotes a closer
relationship between home and the School. There
are separate Associations for the Pre-primary,
Primary and Secondary sections, which are elected
annually according to State Education Department
stipulations. PTA members assist the School
in:
- reviewing the School's progress through Parent
Development Meetings (PDMs)
- effectively communicating between the School
and parents
- supporting the School's various activities
and initiatives, e.g.,organizing social events
for students.
The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and orientation
programmes give parents and students an opportunity
to interact, supply feedback and exchange ideas
with School management. Parents are encouraged
to be involved in the social and emotional development
of their child. Our focus lies in developing parents
as critical partners, actively contributing to
the effective functioning of the School.
