“Above all, it is my hope that the Academies will stimulate creativity, intellectual curiosity and honest inquiry so that their students can adapt and thrive in a world of rapid change; can make informed judgments on life’s daily challenges, and place those judgments in an ethical framework.”
His Highness the Aga Khan, Foundation Ceremony of the Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, Matola, Mozambique (25 June, 2004)
The Aga Khan Academies’ educational curriculum is built upon the framework of the globally renowned International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB is a thorough, multi-disciplinary curriculum that fosters intellectual curiosity, creativity, leadership development, social consciousness and a pluralistic sensibility. The IB is also renowned for preparing students for admission to the best universities in their own countries and abroad.
The curriculum focuses on the development of critical thinking and analysis of issues with an emphasis on multi-cultural understanding and awareness. The curriculum is complemented with co-curricular, athletic and community- service initiatives and the overall educational programme is designed to educate well-rounded, civic-minded individuals. It is designed to enhance students’ academic excellence, their sense of civic responsibility, their understanding of global issues, and their analytical and study skills. The programme also reinforces an understanding of, and great sensitivity to, local languages, history, cultures and environment.
Upon graduation for the Aga Khan Academy students are expected to have mastered at least two languages, including English, to be computer literate, and to have a thorough understanding and background in the diverse academic disciplines of the IB curriculum. Graduates are thus well prepared for the rigours of higher education and to pursue opportunities in an increasingly interdependent world.
