Q: Why study at Aga Khan Academy?
A: Aga Khan Academy offers an international curriculum
in a multi-cultural and progressive atmosphere. The
School emphasizes holistic student-centred education
preparing students for success in a meritocratic society.
The Academy plans to re-locate to a new campus in Nairobi's
Nyari suburb.
Q: Does my child need to be Asian to attend
your school?
A: No. Between 10 to 15 nationalities and cultures are
represented among the approximately 400 students and
37 graduate staff members at any given time.
Q: Should I be concerned that my child will
be influenced by another religion?
A: The Aga Khan Academy follows non-discriminatory policies
and fosters an atmosphere that is respectful and understanding
of different beliefs and cultures.
Q: Will my child have a balanced education?
A: Besides achieving good academic results, Academy
students are encouraged to pursue a wide range of co-curricular
activities. The School offers varied activities, including
all major Sports (Football, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey,
Swimming) and up to 30 Clubs and Societies, such as
Model United Nations, Art, Drama, Environment, Survival
and Magazine & Newsletter.
Q: Will my child have difficulty in any other
international or local school?
A: The Aga Khan Academy offers an international curriculum:
from Grades 7 to 9, students follow the British National
Curriculum to prepare them for the Cambridge-administered
International General Certificate of Secondary Education
(IGCSE) in Grade 11. In Grades 12 - 13, students will
follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
programme, administered by the International Baccalaureate
Organization (IBO). Both the IGCSE and IB are internationally
recognized qualifications.
Q: How does the IB curriculum differ from the
local curriculum or British A- levels?
A: The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme
is a rigorous pre-university course, leading to examinations
that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary school
students and is recognized by universities worldwide.
Students cover six subjects, three at Higher Level and
three at Standard Level. Mathematics, English and one
Foreign Language are compulsory and the remaining subjects
are chosen from the Experimental Sciences, Individuals
and Societies, Arts, Music or Dance.
In addition, Diploma students research a 4,000 word
essay, take an inter-disciplinary course called Theory
of Knowledge that is designed to stimulate critical
thinking, and are expected to fulfill at least 150 hours
of Creativity Action and Service (CAS). Find

Q: Will my child have to study a foreign language?
A: Students from Grades 7 - 8 will study at least two
foreign languages, Kiswahili and either French or German.
In Grade 9, students choose one of these to offer at
IGCSE. IB students must have at least one foreign language.
Q: What if my child falls ill during school
hours?
The Aga Khan Academy makes every effort to ensure the
health and safety of its students and staff. 15 of the
Academy's teaching and all of the support staff are
qualified First Aiders. In addition, several students
are also qualified First Aiders who run and maintain
a First Aid Club. There is a First Aid Room where first
response assistance will be provided to any student
who is ill or injured.The School has access to AAR services
for any situation that cannot be dealt with by the Academy's
staff.
Q: Do you provide textbooks?
A: The School provides textbooks free of charge to all
Grades.
Q: Do you provide transport facilities?
A: Currently the Academy does not provide transport,
though some private operators offer this service. Please
consult the Bursar or Dean of Students. There are plans
to introduce transport when the School relocates to
Nyari.
Q: Do you provide canteen services?
A: The School operates canteen services with hot lunches
and snacks available at reasonable prices. It uses a
token system; parents may choose to purchase lunch tokens
for a set period in advance.
Q: Do you have boarding facilities?
A: Currently the School does not provide boarding facilities.
There are plans to provide boarding facilities to students
when the School re-locates to Nyari.
Q: After successfully completing their studies,
what do your students do?
A: In addition to the local Kenyan universities, graduates
of the Aga Khan Academy have enrolled at international
universities in Canada, U.S.A., South Africa, Australia and the United Kingdom
