The Aga Khan Approach
The Aga Khan Schools strive to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities, and community life. It challenges its pupils to be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious. The school believes that while what students know is important, the true measure of a student's education is the ability to analyze what they do not know.
Developing critical thinking and analysis is therefore at the core of the School's mission. The School also encourages students to respect and appreciate other people's cultures, social structures, values and beliefs. Taken together, these objectives are designed to help equip children with the tools they will need to make their way in school, society and an increasingly interdependent world.
The school is part of the Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, K) and it has a long tradition of leadership in educational development. The foundations of the present system were laid by Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah, Aga Khan III, under whose guidance over 200 schools were established during the first half of the 20th century, the first of them in 1905 in Zanzibar, Gwadur in Pakistan and Mundra in India. Since the creation of Aga Khan Education Service companies in the 1970s, the schools have been centrally administered and managed.
AKES currently operates more than 300 schools and advanced educational programmes that provide quality pre-school, primary, secondary and higher secondary education services to more than 54,000 students in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Uganda, Tanzania and Tajikistan. Schools are also envisaged, or under development, in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique and Syria.
School History
The Aga Khan Nursery School was established in Mombasa in 1939 and since then this fine institution has always been at the fore-front of Early Childhood Development. In 2003 we initiated the first Crèche in Mombasa and in 2004 we were the first Early Years Centre in Kenya to implement the Early Years curriculum of the Primary Years Programme.
School Aims and Philosophy
Our ultimate aim is to develop a well balanced individual who will fit into the world with ease. The Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa is committed to providing a nurturing community in which students, teachers and parents respect and support each other.
Each individual is challenged to learn and grow in a safe environment.
Our goal is that all members of our school community will be critical and compassionate thinkers and lifelong learners who respect the variety of cultures and attitudes that make up the diversity of the world.
Parental Support / Involvement
Our parents are an integral part of the school community. The school works in partnership with parents in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect for the benefit of every child. Parents are invited to curriculum orientation meetings and one-to-one meetings with Class Teachers.
Events such as ‘A day in the life of your child’ help parents to get a clear understanding of the school’s programme. The school’s Parent Association also undertakes projects such as regular dental/ENT checks and eye-screening for the benefit of all our students.
The social evening and end of term movie afternoons provide scope for the school community to interact in a relaxed atmosphere. Workshops are also organised for parents to equip them with basic First Aid skills and to help them gain a clear understanding of the teaching and learning approach used at the school.
