The Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa

Curriculum
The Aga Khan Nursery School follows the early years programme, under the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the widely recognised and esteemed International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. It has high academic standards and is known for its well-rounded approach.

It is an international trans-disciplinary programme designed to foster the development of the whole child, not just in the classroom but also through other means of learning.

The PYP focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic welfare.

The PYP encourages an active learning approach through which children construct meaning from experience about the social and physical world that surrounds them.

The flexibility available in the PYP for early years allows a child to blend into any other curriculum such as BNC, 8-4-4 or the continuing IB.

At the Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa, we want children to acquire the social and emotional skills understood to be helpful in creating lifelong learners. We seek to develop attitudes and concepts within the child’s interests, with the knowledge that skills and development will naturally follow. The IB Primary Years Programme provides an integrated learning approach that helps students grow in key developmental areas. Students grow to be:
  • Caring
  • Thinkers
  • Risk Takers
  • Reflective
  • Knowledgeable
  • Inquirers
  • Well Balanced
  • Open Minded
  • Principled
  • Communicators

Through the early years programme of the IB curriculum, students are offered an exceptional international experience through interaction with those from other cultures. They learn to appreciate the diversity the world has to offer and be enriched by different creative ideas and perspectives.

IT is used to promote learning and develop many skills including: fine motor development through the manipulation of objects such as the mouse; cognitive development through learning and problem solving; representation and symbolic thinking skills; logical thinking skills in numeracy; reading and writing skills; and scientific thinking skills.

The learning process at the Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa goes beyond academics; values and respect form an integral part of our learning process helping children attain whole and well balanced character development.
