The Aga Khan Approach

The Aga Khan Schools strive to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities, and community life. It challenges its pupils to be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious. The school believes that while what students know is important, the true measure of a student's education is the ability to analyze what they do not know.

Developing critical thinking and analysis is therefore at the core of the School's mission. The School also encourages students to respect and appreciate other people's cultures, social structures, values and beliefs. Taken together, these objectives are designed to help equip children with the tools they will need to make their way in school, society and an increasingly interdependent world.

The school is part of the Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, K) and it has a long tradition of leadership in educational development. The foundations of the present system were laid by Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah, Aga Khan III, under whose guidance over 200 schools were established during the first half of the 20th century, the first of them in 1905 in Zanzibar, Gwadur in Pakistan and Mundra in India. Since the creation of Aga Khan Education Service companies in the 1970s, the schools have been centrally administered and managed.

AKES currently operates more than 300 schools and advanced educational programmes that provide quality pre-school, primary, secondary and higher secondary education services to more than 54,000 students in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Uganda, Tanzania and Tajikistan. Schools are also envisaged, or under development, in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique and Syria.

School History
The Aga Khan Nursery School, Nairobi beginnings date back to 1947 when the school was inaugurated with a group of 45 enthusiastic and eager learners. These children were initially housed in a small building adjoining the present Aga Khan Academy. By 1954 the school population had grown to 140. Eventually the school population outgrew its premises and the school relocated to its current location on Kipande/Ojijo Roads where it was officially opened in 1965.

School Aims and Philosophy
The school’s mission statement is to provide a well balanced foundation in early childhood education with the aim of preparing students to face challenges, take advantage of the opportunities that will be encountered in the next level of education and beyond, and to participate actively in the building of a responsible society.

Our children can” is the school motto. Not only do children get the opportunity to excel academically, but they also get to develop in a holistic learning environment.

The Nursery School aims to fully develop the social, moral, physical, and intellectual potential of each child. The school strives to provide an environment with a range of clearly defined areas to encourage exploration, investigation and play, both indoors and outdoors.

Parental Support / Involvement
Our parents are an integral part of the school community. The school works in partnership with parents in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect for the benefit of every child.

Team work between parents and teachers, through parental involvement in the child’s development and education, is encouraged by the school’s administration.

Parents are involved as much as possible in fun and constructive activities and are also kept well updated on early childhood education trends.

Such events invite the parent community as well as relatives and friends. These events include the parents’ social evening, educational workshops and parent voluntary workshops.
