Curriculum: A Blend of Local and International Approaches
In 2003, the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School (Gilgit) redesigned its academic programmes in line with the educational best practices of reputed national and international colleges and universities.

The school curriculum is designed not only to match the objectives of the national curriculum but to enrich that curriculum with resource material for teachers and reference material for the students.

In keeping with the vision of the Aga Khan schools, the School strives to prepare students for the challenges of the modern world by providing a broad education that includes the introduction of new theories, ideas and technologies.

Learning at AKHSS-Gilgit
At Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Gilgit teaching and learning processes directly and indirectly aim at creating critical thinking and analytical skills in students. Purposeful learning is the prime concern of AKHSS-Gilgit in all the subjects which are dealt with at the campus, may it be Science, Commerce or English. Teachers exploit all possible means of effective teaching to give a sound footing in student’s intellectual, moral, social, academic and physical realms. Teaching methods are pluralistic approach so as to make their learning areas rich and ripe in all the possible aspects.

Currently school offers instruction in following areas:

1.	Pre-Secondary (Grade 8th)
2.	Secondary level (SSC)
3.	Higher Secondary level (HSSC) Pre-Medical Pre-Engineering Commerce

Pre-Secondary Level
Students are given admissions in grade 8th after they have passed their seventh grade from any registered government or private school. National curriculum for grade 8th is followed at school but teachers have made significant enrichments to the syllabus through incorporating interactive instructional strategies. Prime focus of grade 8th curriculum is to give a strong basis to students in English, Mathematics and Science subjects. Other compulsory subjects like Urdu, Pakistan studies and Islamiat are also part of the curriculum.

Secondary Level (SSC)
School offers science subjects at Secondary level. These subjects include Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Pakistan Studies, Islamiat and Urdu. The school follows Aga Khan University Examination syllabus prescribed by National Curriculum Wing.

Higher Secondary Level (HSSC)
At Higher Secondary Level, there are three streams of education offered by the school: Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering and Commerce. The basic purpose of higher secondary education at school is to provide a springboard to the students that will help them land in reputed institutions of learning in the country and abroad. The school has successfully been achieving this aim since its inception.

Again, the curriculum followed is that prescribed by National Curriculum Wing. For this year only, grade 12 is registered with Karakurum International University, Examination Branch, Gilgit while grade 11 is registered with the Aga Khan University Examination Board, Karachi. From year 2008, all classes of HSSC will be registered with the AKU-EB.
