The Aga Khan Education Service, Tajikistan
The Aga Khan Education Service, Tajikistan began
its operations under the auspices of the Aga Khan
Education Fund in 1997. The Fund's goal was to
improve the teaching of English language and Market
Economics at institutions of higher learning in
Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic.
In Phase One, trainers were successfully trained
in the United Kingdom. Phase Two will see these
trainers teaching a cohort of 300 university and
high school teachers in the two disciplines.
In addition to its support for the emergency
assistance programme to Gorno-Badakhshan in
Tajikistan, AKES is establishing model schools
in the province's capital, Khorog, and in Osh
in the neighbouring Kyrgyz Republic, to serve
as regional centres of excellence.
Through the partnerships with the Aga Khan University-Institute
of Educational Development, International Academic
Partnership and the Phillips Academy, Andover,
several of the teachers have attended training
and developmental workshops both locally and abroad.
AKES, Tajikistan collaborates with five government
schools in the GBAO districts. This collaboration
includes professional development, facility
refurbishment and the provision of basic equipment
and resources. It aims to improve the quality
of education in these schools and build linkages
with the Aga Khan Lycée.
Currently, the major initiatives throughout the
system include:
- the introduction of computers and distance
learning to supplement teaching and improve
learning methods
- the improvement of physical infrastructure,
particularly of community-based schools
- advanced teacher training through the
Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational
Developmen
- an East African education initiative
to facilitate coordination of programmes,
identification of best practices and quality
educational initiatives, advancement of
policy dialogue on privatisation of schools,
improvement in teacher training and retention
and acceleration of computer-assisted educational
methods
- development of English language and economics
programmes at selected universities in Central
Asia, through the Aga Khan Education Fund
- collaboration with a leading private school
in the USA - Phillips Academy, Andover - to
improve AKES programmes in science, mathematics,
economics, English language and technology.
