The IB diploma programme requires study across a broad and balanced range of knowledge domains including languages, humanities, science and technology, mathematics and the arts, drawing on content from educational cultures across the world.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB DP)
AKMSS offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma for students in Years 12 & 13.  The IB diploma programme is a rigorous, pre-university course which is internationally recognized at universities world-wide.  Entry to the IB diploma programme at AKMSS is highly competitive and students need to be able to demonstrate a high standard of prior attainment.

The Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School The ability to work in teams and the ability to make connections across traditional subject boundaries are aptitudes that many prestigious companies seek when recruiting young graduates. The IB diploma programme requires study across a broad and balanced range of knowledge domains including languages, humanities, science and technology, mathematics and the arts, drawing on content from educational cultures across the world.  Two important features of the programme are the opportunities students have for engaging in trans-disciplinary learning and for individual and collaborative planning and research.  The ability to work in teams and the ability to make connections across traditional subject boundaries are aptitudes that many prestigious companies seek when recruiting young graduates.  Top rank universities world-wide also value these qualities, which is one of the reasons for the growing popularity of the IB diploma programme.

Students study six subjects selected from the following: English, French, Kiswahili, Geography, Economics, Business and Management, Psychology, Information Technology for a Global Society, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Mathematical Studies.

In addition to the familiar study of academic subjects, the IB as three additional elements that all students have to follow: a theory of knowledge course, an extended research essay, and a community service programme (CAS) requiring action and reflection.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
The Theory of Knowledge part of the course is intended to encourage students to reflect upon knowledge gained both inside and outside the classroom.  They are asked to question the nature of knowledge across disciplines, to learn to recognize subjective and ideological biases, and to develop the ability to analyse evidence using rational thought and argument.

Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS)
CAS is an important component of the IB curriculum.  All students are required to undertake 150 hours of CAS activity over the two years of the course.  It provides a framework for experiential learning and reflection about that learning.  Through active participation in and reflection upon experiences gained through a variety of creative endeavours, physical activities and community service projects, students develop a greater level of self-confidence, team work and leadership skills, and sense of civil responsibility.

Extended Essay
The Extended Essay requires students to select a subject of their choice and research and develop this subject in a 4000-word essay.  The extended essay introduces students to the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at university level. Students may opt to deepen their knowledge by choosing to investigate a subject within one of the higher-level courses they are taking, or add breadth to their academic experience by undertaking the research of a subject matter in another field of interest not included in their programme choices.

In the final stage of the programme, each student’s performance and levels of knowledge are assessed both internally by teachers according to set criteria, and externally by independent examiners according to global standards applied to all IB schools. The Diploma Programme's grading system is criterion-referenced: each student's performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement consistent from one examination session to the next.
