Activities |
The School strives to create
a harmonious balance between academic demands,
sporting and cultural activities and community
life. A wide range of intellectual, sporting
and social activities are made available. Students
are encouraged to participate in sports and
games such as football, basketball, volleyball,
athletics, badminton, cricket and table tennis.
Students can also join social clubs such as
the international Red Cross, Roots and Shoots
or the local Wildlife, Music & Dancing,
Martial Arts, Cookery, Art and Crafts clubs.
Scouting
One of the most active clubs in the School,
the Scouts frequently participate in community
development and skills–oriented activities
such as camping, life-saving and trekking. The
troop has made local and international expeditions
to Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and
Sweden. They also share experiences and meet
with international scouts during camps and jamborees.
Drama
During assemblies, annual concerts and awards
days, the School Drama club regularly performs
short plays, skits, dramas, poetry regularly
for its peers.
Current Affairs
The Current Affairs Club encourages students
to become informed members of society by exposing
them newspapers, television (local and international)
and the Internet.
Mathematics
This club encourages students to overcome a
fear of numbers and strives to enable members
to see the fun side of mathematics. To inject
enthusiasm, teachers and students devise creative
stories, drama and games.
Art and Craft
In the Art Club, members express themselves
in creative ways by working with different materials,
enhancing their drawing, painting, collage,
print and sculpturing skills. They are encouraged
to develop an appreciation of shape, line, colour,
texture and tone and the necessary skills required
to work with different media.
Recreation Games
The Club believes in the credo: “All work
and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Students
participate in meaningful games to improve their
thinking skills. They test their geometrical
skills through snooker and enhance language
skills with Scrabble.
Red Cross
This internationally affiliated club trains
its members in health and first aid. Members
learn to perform basic first aid including treating
burns, bruises and broken limbs. Students also
discover environmental awareness and participate
in community development activities.
AKPS Writer’s Club
The Writer’s Club is managed by faculty
who are alumni of Philips Academy, Andover,
USA. Students enhance their writing skills by
participating in practical Community Service
activities. They produce brochures and collateral
for different community sectors on local issues,
concerns or events (for example aids awareness
brochures).
Music and Dance
Members develop their passion by engaging in
music and dance from traditional to western,
Arabic to oriental, Jazz to pop and rap to tap
dancing.
Library Club (Upper and middle School)
Designed to cultivate healthy reading habits,
this club provides students access to quality
literature. Club initiatives include literature-related
activities and encouraging students to make
better use of library time.
Needle Work
This club exposes members to needlework fundamentals
including; producing thread piece design, project
planning and completion. Students create pieces
based on designs of their own, from books or
teachers. Final products include table and chair
covers, throws, sweaters and dresses.
Martial Arts
The Martial Arts club promotes self-discipline
through physical and mental training. Members
practice Shorinji Kempo (a traditional art of
Judo) by learning defense skills through training.
The art improves physical health, mental development
and self-defence abilities.
Science
The Science Club inspires inquisitive minds
to reason, interpolate, extrapolate and make
meaningful fact-based deductions. Every Friday,
members meet in the science laboratory to discover,
prove and investigate why things behave the
way they do.
Roots and Shoots
The Roots and Shoots Club is focused on increasing
environmental awareness. It also aims to develop
knowledge, attitudes, skills, motivation and
commitment in youth. Areas of major activity
include care and concern for the community,
environment and animals. This club exists in
more than 32 countries and continues to increase
in popularity.
