In December 2005, the school will
start implementing the International Baccalaureate
Organization’s Primary Years Programme
(IBO-PYP) which, among many other things, encourages
inquiry-based teaching and learning. It is delivered
with a child-centred approach and an underlying
philosophy of student education that features
self-initiated, self-paced learning through
play, discussion and project work. Teachers
assume the role of facilitators of the process
of inquiry.
The following subjects are offered: English
language, Mathematics, Kiswahili language, Social
Studies, Science and Technology, ICT, French
language, Personal, Social and Physical Education
(PSPE), Arts (Music, Drama and Visual arts).
Computer Studies
The Junior level is focused on subjects
(Mathematics, Science and reading) or themes
(floating and sinking), as well as specific
software concentrating on gaining familiarity
with the computer, Mathematical skills and reading
proficiency. These activities are integrated
in to classroom curriculum. At the higher level,
the curriculum emphasizes using computers as
a research tool, integrating classroom projects
and the subject curriculum.
The Aga Khan Schools in East Africa are working
to integrate computer learning into their curriculum
to facilitate learning rather than keeping instead
of computer studies as an individual subject.
The overall objective is student computer literacy.
