Admissions

Entry to the Aga Khan High School, Kampala is offered on a competitive basis, regardless of background, and based on merit.

Admissions to the Aga Khan High School, KampalaEntry requirements
For entry to the Ugandan ‘O’ level (S1), students should score 14 points or above in the PLE (Primary Leaving Examination). For IGCSE, PLE is not a requirement but prospective candidates sit for an entrance test. For A-level and IB Diploma, the student must have at least a Division Two in UCE or 5 credits in IGCSE and credits (A, B, C grade) in the chosen subjects for study. The Head of the previous school must vouch for good conduct . Notable achievement in non-academic activities is an advantage.

Admission to the UCE/UACE Courses
The academic year for local courses begins after the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examination results are announced in February and March respectively.

As soon as these results are released, parents should request admission confirmation from the School. Copies of the last two school report forms are required.

This does not apply to students enrolling from the Aga Khan Primary School or UCE students from the Aga Khan High School who wish to pursue the UACE. Admission for them is granted based on Headmaster recommendation.

Admission to the IGCSE Course
This course begins each September with transfer from junior international schools at the end of Grade 6, when pupils are expected to be about 11 years old. An Entrance Test is arranged in March. It consists of papers in English, Science and Mathematics. In some cases, interviews are conducted. A number of places are also offered annually in January for PLE candidates.

Admission to the IB Diploma Course
This course also begins each September, normally following completion of IGCSE in May-June of the same year.

Applications will be open from February of the year concerned. Candidates may be given an offer based on their ‘mock’ examination results, though final IGCSE results will usually be considered. All candidates are given an interview to ascertain their awareness of the IB programme and suitability for it.

Diploma students choose 3 subjects at Higher Level and 3 at Standard Level.

Transfer from other Schools
Children transferring mid-course must provide necessary information and may be required to sit for an entrance test and/or interview. A recommendation of good conduct and leaving certificate from the previous school are necessary. Individual arrangements are made to place the student in the most appropriate class, if a place is available.

Application Forms
Application forms are available from the School Office. The following documents must be attached to the completed application form.

  • Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Two passport-sized photographs of the applicant.
  • Copy of School Leaving Certificate from previous school
  • Copies of recent Progress Report Cards from the previous class issued by the last school attended.

Note: The originals of all forms and certificates may be inspected.

Parents Guide
Upon successful admission to the School, the parent/guardian must sign an Obligations form (addressing fee payment, student withdrawal, absence from school and conditions for promotion). There is also a School Regulations form, signed by both the student and parent/guardian, establishing expected student conduct during the course of study. Note that entry also requires the parent/guardian to be physically present when the admission offer is accepted.

The minimum promotional requirement is: Division II in UCE, ‘D’ average in IGCSE, 7 points at A-level, and 24 points in the IB Diploma.

The maximum class size is 30, though often much less, the overall student - teacher ratio being about 11:1. This allows educators to effectively monitor each student’s progress.
