Every year on 22 April, people around the globe come together to honour and conserve their shared home: Earth.

The Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa celebrates Earth Day
Known as Earth Day, the annual event began in the United States in 1970 with environmental teach-ins on college campuses. It has since evolved into a global celebration of the environmental movement’s achievements and is a reminder of the work yet to be done.

Staff and students at the Aga Khan Nursery School, Mombasa celebrated Earth Day with a range of hands-on awareness-raising activities and sessions on the importance of saving and protecting the environment.

The children had a delightful time with their teachers brainstorming different ways to preserve our environment for the future. It was particularly interesting to hear them talk about the three ‘R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. They participated in activities on the need to make Earth a better place and gave brilliantly creative suggestions on how they could save energy. These included reusing soap water to wash cars, using plastic bottles and boxes to make toys and re-forestation to allow wild animals to live peacefully in their habitats.

The teachers enjoyed facilitating the children’s learning. The day ended with the children making mosaic art pieces and projects that showed their understanding of the need for and importance of looking after our planet.
