Commemorated every year on 19 January since 1958, National Popcorn Day celebrates the sweet and/or savoury treat and the different ways it’s used, from a snack, to jewellery or art. At AKNS, Mombasa, the students were taught the history of popcorn, along with popcorn-themed songs, rhymes and poems. They also engaged in many arts and crafts activities and made their own popcorn with the help of their teachers. The day ended with one classroom being transformed into a movie theatre, in which the children ate their popcorn and enjoyed a movie.

“National Popcorn Day has taught us that popcorn is unique and versatile,” said AKNS, Mombasa Headteacher Elizabeth Adhuno. “One thing I will take away from this day that I can relate to our students is that, although popcorn kernels can be prepared in the same pot, heat and oil at the same time, the kernels do not pop at the same time. Each kernel, or student, will ‘pop’ at their own time, and our role as educators is to be there and support those students.”
