Grade 4 student wins gold at World Schools Chess Championship
The Aga Khan Education Service, Tanzania is delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Grade 4 student Aditya Rathore from the Aga Khan Nursery and Primary School, Dar es Salaam who secured the gold medal at the 2026 FIDE–ISCF World Schools Chess Championship in Cape Town, South Africa.
Organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the International School Chess Federation (ISCF), the event marked the first time the continental qualifier was hosted on African soil. The tournament brought together 26 school teams from 22 countries across the continent, competing for top honours and a pathway to the global Grand Final.
Selected by the Tanzania Chess Association to represent the nation, eight-year-old Aditya delivered a flawless performance by winning all eight of his matches against Africa’s brightest young talent. His perfect record reflects extraordinary focus, strategic thinking and dedication to mastering the game.
Reflecting on the rigorous preparation required ahead of the tournament, Aditya shared how mental determination carried him through demanding training sessions.
“There were times I felt like I didn't want to keep going anymore,” Aditya recalled. “I kept thinking about myself lifting the trophy. So, I told myself, 'Keep going. Keep going. Keep going.'”
Chess equips young learners with critical life skills, including logical reasoning, strategic planning, problem-solving and resilience. Aditya’s success demonstrates how these analytical skills, combined with determination and a love for learning, can help young people excel both on and off the chessboard.
"Our approach is to encourage students to discover their passions and participate in the sports and clubs they enjoy," said Sports Teacher Claud John. "Through regular training and participation in competitions, students develop their skills, confidence and teamwork while striving for excellence. We are proud to see them represent the school and achieve success across different sporting disciplines."
Following his historic victory, Aditya was welcomed back to Dar es Salaam by national sports officials who celebrated his continental gold medal as an inspiration for youth sports in the country. Aditya’s accomplishment is a celebration of his journey and the commitment that has brought him to this stage. His achievement reminds us of the importance of encouraging young learners to pursue their interests, embrace challenges and strive for excellence.
